Structured Cabling FAQs

What is structured cabling?

Structured cabling is quite simply a wiring system that enables your voice (e.g phones), data (e.g. LAN/internet) and in some cases video (e.g. cameras) to use the same wiring infrastructure. Instead of having a different type of wire for each of these systems, the same wire (e.g. cat5e etc.) can be used for all.

Structured cabling schemes provide connections from user oulets around the office/building to a central location where the services are installed. Services can be simply patched to any outlet.

Why should you adopt structured cabling?
  • Legacy wiring often lacks the bandwidth needed to support the new applications such as IP (Internet Protocol) convergence, streaming video and multimedia
  • Old wiring systems do not easily allow changes to your office layout
  • Moves and changes are made easy because the wiring infrastructure doesn’t have to change. It’s simply an unplug and go move.
Can I use structured cabling in the home?

Absolutely yes. Whether it's just for your phone wiring or for more services stuctured cabling can be used. In fact in the USA cat5e cable and above is specified as standard for the internal wiring for the telphone service
